his latest grafik design book. look for a new quiksilver campaign this fall, as david continues to design their ads and various products for the surfwear company.
david has just finished designing a 240 book for the laguna art museum, to coincide with their exhibition
SURF CULTURE: the art history of surfing.
a new web magazine, “the mixture”, will beup this fall featuring davids design and input.
And pick up the latest nine inch nails DVD to see davids navigational work.
Recent lectures include a sold out standing room only gig in portland oregon, that -despite the AIGA refusing to help out with the event -sponsored by the northwest college of art,and plasm magazine, drew over 600 people.
recent sold out lectures also included”the art institute of pittsburgh” (also snubbed by the local aiga leadership, and also sold out), the school of visual arts in nyc, the art directors club in new brunswick canada, and sao paulo , brazil. david also
judged this years art directors club awards held in new york city.
coming up this september and october include lectures/workshops in slovenia,
london, and helsinki.
also: check out the design workshops david is giving in august and september in florida at the aca.
 
david will be working out of the malibu studio this summer, and will be opening a branch office in charleston south carolina in the fall.(both charleston +malibu offices are looking for interns-entry level positions) the primary office remains in new york, (with a winter branch in tortola). all for now. have a, no actually MAKE, a great summer. dcd nyc,

archive: news-0111: immediately following the events of  september 11, few things seemed more
unimportant and meaningless than doing graphic design. (well maybe
WRITING about graphic design).
but as time passes it is important to again do what one loves and is passionate about, and hopefully
find ways to help make the world a little better place to be in.  grafik design DID  determine the
outcome of our last presidential election, while  groups like attik use it to help promote cigerette smoking.

dc is designing a new book collaborating with many artists, writers, musicians that deals with
peace in our world. proceeds to help the wtc relief fund. more details soon as various contributors
are confirmed.
david’s collaboration with marshall mcluhan”the book of probes”( gingko press, 640 pages..)
release has been pushed back to early spring, so that all the different language versions can be
released at the same time, including japanese, spanish, and german  to name a few.
david’s own new book trek, will also be released in late spring.
david took a break from lecturing for awhile after sept 11, but decided it was time to return, and
spoke first to a sold out, standing room only crowd at F.I.T. in new york. he also spoke for the art
directors club of sacramento, california, where he premiered some new work dealing with sept 11
and the media. recent talks included the watkins college of art and design in tennessee, and flori-
da state university. david will be judging a photography exhibition in amsterdam later this month, as
well as lecturing in finland, the island of mallorca and puerto rico. carson has also completed the
new identity for the gran hotel that sits opposite the bilbao guggenheim museum in spain as well
as window designs for the fall fashion collection at printemps in paris.

BEEN  has also just been completed, utilizing david’s photographs. the dvd/cd will be in stores the

david continues to design for quiksilver in california, as well as evolution surfboards(wayne lynch),
and is doing a new tv end tag for xerox.  he is also designing a new issue of BIG magazine that is
due out in may…
david will again be judging the online  flash film festival in barcelona this spring , and also lecturing
and exhibiting in vienna.
and dc is happy to report he’s already had 5 ”classic” days surfing this fall at his home break in the
carribean.
 
note: since this letter newsletter was first composed, another plane crashed in new york, and
davids new york apartment was gutted by fire, a total loss.

archive: news-0107: in july david clocked some time at estudio mariscal in barcelona where he reported a warm welcome from the artists who reside there in an amazingly collaborative environment near the sea. click on

he’ll be collaborating with javier mariscal (studio mariscal) in the design of all graphics and signage, as well as an elaborate in-room interactive tv system, for the gran hotel which serves as the main hotel for the frank gehry designed guggenheim museum in bilbao.  he also visited the gallery space at museo del contemporeano in castellon, spain, where an exhibition of his work is  planned.
david’s currently working out of his malibu office, and will be going to new orleans later this month to continue working on the new dvd and live cd project with nine inch nails. later in september he will travel back to the new york office, before opening an office in the caribbean on november 1st.

DAVIDCARSON’S all over the place again schedule of events for fall 2001.
currently scheduled events include:
on september 12th and 13th carson will speak in panama to two universities: the usma and la nacional, he returns to the u.s., to alabama, the university of montevallo on september 18th and 19th .
carson travels to norway where he will be a guest lecturer at the eDIT 5.0 design conference on the 29th of sept., then on to finland  and then on to paris to attend the opening of his 5 storefront window  display designs for “Le printemps” .
Lectures in october and november include the portfolio center in atlanta, universities in puerto rico, the ADAC in sacramento, the columbus school of art and design, george brown university in toronto, watkins college in nashville, florida state university and david has been invited to be part of the judging for PANL (photographers association of the netherlands) in amsterdam in november, as well as conducting a poster workshop in cape town, south africa.
carson is working closely with quiksilver, evolution surfboards, to work with the marshall mcluen estate and nine inch nails.
he is also designing a special issue of BIG magazine due out next spring.  his collaboration with marshall mcluen, probes, will be out this winter, followed by his new design book,  TREK.
he continues to collaborate with frank lloyd wright’s daughter, elizabeth wright, on a film on architecture, and is being represented for film and broadcast design by digital kitchen (seattle, chicago, california).
 
and if you’re in europe, be sure to check out the new 90 second pro cigarette smoking commercials playing in movie theaters throughout europe, (reportedly 30 versions!) designed by attik, who asked that we pass along that they will also have another book out this fall, but, the new book will “unfortunately” not show their recent cigarette commercials……

archive: news-0106: david has just returned from his exhibition opening in london at the marlbourgh fine art gallery. the show is up till the 27 of july.

for more info. on july 5th he gave a lecture , with lewis blackwell, to a sold out crowd at the ica (institute of contemporary art, london)
prior to this trip carson was in new york working on the navigation system for the new nine inch nails dvd,
as well as the packaging for the new live cd. david was also putting the final touches on his book with marshall mcluhen “probes” that has david interpreting over 400 of mcluens quotes-some never before seen in print.
david worked with marshalls son erik, and the book(now well over 700 pages) is scheduled for an early fall release thru gingko press. David is also art directing a major mcluhen exhibition in paris in 2003. other projects include a 60 page photographic essay for metropolis magazines new book “design Is…” carson is also working on a series of new quiksilver ads, as well as ads for evolution surfboards(wayne lynch)
 
also in the works is a film on architecture that frank lloydd wrights daughter elizabeth has asked carson to direct. Last may, david gave lectures and workshops (all sold out) in paris, barcelona, portugal and munich. in barcelona he worked on some new lithography prints , now on display in london (.The printing is done on slates of stone.)
 
david is currently working on his new book, TREK.
also in the planing stages: a major  exhibition of his new work in spain in october, as well as lectures and workshops in norway, finland, and panama.

in april david’s doing a workshop at the university of georgia in athens, appearing at seybold in boston as a panelist, and giving talks at quiksilver in huntington beach, columbia college in chicago, the university of florida in st. augustine, the annual aiga bash in omaha, nebraska, the university of arizona in tucson, and montreal & toronto in canada.
in may david’s an official judge for an international flash competition in barcelona
(http://www.onlineflashfilmfestival.com/) before he heads to paris for a lecture & party celebrating the opening of his new office there. then he’s spending a week in barcelona with index books in conjunction with the release of the spanish edition of the revised end of print. he’s also doing a two-day workshop & lecture in munich and appearing as a special guest & lecturer at a design conference in moscow.
